no two cowhides are ever alike; nevertheless, they can be grouped into four basic pattern types splash, exotic, gris and solid each with its particular range of colorations

splash

these hides have definitive splotches and sprinkles of dark against a light ground; commonly called nguni hides in south africa

black-on-white and brown-on white; also as a “tri-colour": black & brown-on-white

exotic

these hides have definitive markings that move from more to less intense, while the coloration moves from dark to light

various browns, through greys and taupes to beiges and creams

gris

these hides, whilst without pattern, have hairs that are tipped with light; the coloration moves gently from dark to light

from warm, brownish-greys to cool, icy-greys

solid

these hides are without pattern and are either monotone in coloration or offer a slight variation in the tonal range

black, ivory, beige, camel and many browns
